Comparative morphological analysis of cherry tomato fruits from three cropping systems Scientia Agricola
Stertz,Sônia Cachoeira; Espírito Santo,Ana Paula do; Bona,Cleusa; Freitas,Renato João Sossela de.
Attempts to meet produces market demand are not always followed by research reports showing the impact of novel, intensive cropping systems on the environment, human and animal health, and eventual chemical and structural changes of plants. This work carries a comparative evaluation of the morphology and anatomy of cherry tomato fruits obtained from organic, conventional and hydroponic cropping systems. Fruits were collected at the free market in the greater Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. For each culture method, 50 fruits their weight, diameter and volume measured. For the anatomical analysis, samples of the pericarp of ten fruits were excised and embedded in glycol methacrylate; 6-mm cuts were then obtained, stained with toluidine blue, and mounted on...

Comparative morphology among representatives of main taxa of Scaphopoda and basal protobranch Bivalvia (Mollusca) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
This study deals with detailed morphology and anatomy of 4 species of Scaphopoda and 5 species of protobranch Bivalvia. Both classes are traditionally grouped in the taxon Diasoma, which has been questioned by different methodologies, such as molecular and developmental. This study is developed under a phylogenetic methodology with the main concern in performing it in an intelligible and testable methodology. The analyzed Scaphopoda species came from the Brazilian coast and belong to the family Dentaliidae [(1) Coccodentalium carduus; (2) Paradentalium disparile] and Gadiliidae; [(3) Polyschides noronhensis, n. sp. from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago; (4) Gadila braziliensis]. These species represent the main branches of the class Scaphopoda. From...

Comparative morphology of the spermathecae of some species of Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy and Cochliomyia Townsend (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Harterreiten-Souza,Érica Sevilha; Pujol-Luz,José Roberto.
Comparative morphology of the spermathecae of some species of Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy and Cochliomyia Townsend (Diptera, Calliphoridae). Little is known about the morphology of the chitinized structures of the spermathecae of the Calliphoridae. In this work, the spermathecae of Chrysomya albiceps Wiedemann, 1819, C. megacephala Fabricius, 1794, Cochliomyia macellaria Fabricius, 1775 and C. hominivorax Coquerel, 1858 are described and illustrated. The occurrence in one species of four spermathecae, an atypical form for blow flies, was recorded for the first time. The analysis of these structures will allow a better understanding of this group as well as provide taxonomic characters for future phylogenetic studies.

Comparative morphology of the tongue in free-tailed bats (Chiroptera, Molossidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gregorin,Renato.
Descriptive and comparative studies on tongue of nineteen Molossidae, one Mystacinidae, and four Vespertilionidae bats species were carried out. Analysis was restricted to the external morphology, covering general shape of the tongue and its papillae. Types of papillae and their distribution presented considerable intergeneric variation, considering the strictly insectivorous feeding habits of these bats. Distribution of the data of tongue morphology is analyzed and compared with the phylogenetic schemes proposed previously and comments about evolutionary relationships among taxa were done.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

Comparative study of mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor queens obtained from polygynic and monogynic colonies Biocell
Fioretti Gracioli-Vitti,Luciana; Camargo Abdalla,Fábio; Morelli Silva De Moraes,Regina Lúcia.
The aim of the present study was analyze, by histological and morphometrical studies, mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor queens collected from monogynic and polygynic colonies and compare their level of development. The results showed that the glands of physogastric queens from monogynic colony present a higher level of activity in relation to the queens of polygynic colonies; this is explained by the fact that just a unique queen controls the monogynic colony. In the polygynic colonies, the queens may divide such control to each other.

Consequences du cycle de mue et d'intermue sur la morphologie fonctionnelle des pars molaris des Crustaces Peracarides. ArchiMer
Saudray, Yves.
The anatomy of the masticatory part of the mandible (the pars molaris) has been studied throughout the moult/intermoult cycle in some peracacarid crustacean species, by scanning electron microscopy. Species examined were: Ligia oceanica, Sphaeroma serratum, Idotea balthica, Talitrus saltator, Hyale nilssoni, Gammarid amphipoda and the mysid Pranus flexuosus. Feeding is known to decline near moulting; this may be because the chewing surfaces become loosened before moulting. Also the surfaces are worn down and useless, and feeding ceases. Very long intermoult periods, as found in old individuals, may thus cause long periods of starvation and this could enhance the symptoms of senescence.

Contribution to the stratigraphy of the onshore Paraíba Basin, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rossetti,Dilce F.; Góes,Ana M.; Bezerra,Francisco H.R.; Valeriano,Márcio M.; Brito-Neves,Benjamim B.; Ochoa,Felipe L..
Several publications have contributed to improve the stratigraphy of the Paraíba Basin in northeastern Brazil. However, the characterization and distribution of sedimentary units in onshore areas of this basin are still incomplete, despite their significance for reconstructing the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the South American passive margin. This work provides new information to differentiate among lithologically similar strata, otherwise entirely unrelated in time. This approach included morphological, sedimentological and stratigraphic descriptions based on surface and sub-surface data integrated with remote sensing, optically stimulated luminescence dating, U+Th/He dating of weathered goethite, and heavy mineral analysis. Based on this study, it...

Cordelia's Dilemma, Historical Bias, and General Evolutionary Trends: Catfishes as a Case Study for General Discussions on Phylogeny and Macroevolution International Journal of Morphology
Diogo,Rui.
As noted Gould in his recent and last book «The structure of evolutionary theory», discourses on the high importance and frequency of evolutionary trends have consumed a great part of the research on the history of clades. Although aware that natural selection theoretically yields adaptation to immediate environments, many authors defend such trends as generalised improvements somehow conferring advantages across most or all experienced environments. The high importance given to evolutionary trends is questioned by Gould, who considers that such a high importance given to such evolutionary trends bears no necessary relationship to the relative frequency or casual weight of these events in evolution, but mainly to a major bias: trends tell histories, and...

Cordiluroides Albuquerque from Costa Rica: first records, descriptions and taxonomic changes (Diptera, Muscidae, Coenosiinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Couri,Márcia S.; Carvalho,Claudio J. B. de; Pont,Adrian C..
Cordiluroides Albuquerque is a genus of Neotropical Coenosiinae (Muscidae), known from six species. The genus is here recorded for the first time from Costa Rica, on the basis of three species: C. listrata Albuquerque, 1954, C. insularis (Willliston, 1896) and C. bistriata (Wulp, 1896) sp. rev.. We provide a key for the identification of these Costa Rican species, redescribe and illustrate their external morphological characters and terminalia. C. bistriata and C. vittifera (Stein, 1904) are both considered to be good species and are re-instated from the synonymy of C. insularis. The type material of C. listrata (Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro), of C. insularis and C. bistriata (The Natural History Museum, London) and of C. vittifera (Museum für...
